Urethra Disorders & Treatments

Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra, the tube through whuch urine comes out of the body.

Causes :

Bacteria from the stool,

bacteria and viruses acquired through sexual transmission

Inflammation of the urethra

Symptoms :

Pain with urination

Feeling the frequent or urgent need to urinate

Difficulty starting urination

Itching, pain, or discomfort when a person is not urinating.

Pain during sex

Discharge from the urethral opening or vagina

Blood in the semen or urine

Diagnosis of Urethritis :

Urine Routine

Urine Culture

Urine Microscopy/ Discharge microscopy

Serological Tests for Viruses

Urethritis Treatment :

Antibiotics

Antiviral medications

Treatment of sequelae - strictures, epididymitis, orchitis

Sexual Partner (s) of the patient may need to be treated as well, based on the cause of the urethritis.

Urethral Stricture

Urethral strictures can result from inflammatory, ischemic, or traumatic processes. These processes lead to scar tissue formation; scar tissue contracts and reduces the caliber of the urethral lumen, causing resistance to the antegrade flow of urine.

Causes :

traumatic

iatrogenic

inflammatory

infectious - gonococcal

malignant, and

congenital

Symptoms :

decreased force of stream,

incomplete emptying of the bladder,

urinary terminal dribbling, and

urinary intermittency.

urinary retention, or

urinary tract infections.

Investigations :

Routine Blood & Urine tests

Uroflowmetry

Ultrasound KUB with PVR

Ascending Urethrogram

Surgical Therapy :

Urethral dilation

Internal Urethrotomy

Permanent urethral stents

Open Reconstruction - Primary repair

Repairs involving tissue-transfer techniques - single stage / double stage repairs
